I am pleased to be able to inform you that Sussex County Bowls has awarded our Jean Akehurst with the Michael Newth Trophy for outstanding services to our Club. She was presented with this at an Area Ladies County Meeting to her great surprise and delight. No more than she deserves!

Michael Newth Trophy – 2018
I have been instructed by Hellingly Bowls Club Committee to submit a nomination for the above-mentioned Trophy.
There are many factors for nominating our current Ladies Captain, Jean Akehurst, for such recognition.
Jean has been a member of Hellingly Bowls Club for 22 years and has served as Ladies Captain for the past 18 years. During that time, she has won most of the Club competitions, many several times over. Three years ago she won her Sussex County Badge. However, Jean has not allowed her enjoyment of playing bowls interfere with what she believes is her duty to helping run the Club.
For several years she has helped her husband organise the Match Fixtures Book. In particular, with organising the advertisements. For the past 18 years she has held Match Selector duties and organised the ladies for event catering. This culminated this month with making all the arrangements for a visit by the Chelsea Pensioners Bowls Team to help celebrate the 50th Anniversary of our green being open for play.
Over the last 11 years, she has taken on responsibility of stocking and running our bar facilities; a great benefit to the Club social life. There are many other social events that Jean has instigated and organised for the enjoyment of the Club members. Several such events she has arranged during the winter months, with the aim of keeping members together.
Our Club recognised her unstinting support six years ago when she was awarded Life Membership to the Club. We feel that greater recognition is now her due.
